Ink Dancing from the Heart: Wu Yu-Ying Calligraphy Exhibition

The brush is like life, the ink like time. Every stroke is an extension of the heart, every drop of fragrant ink a distillation of the years. The "Ink Dancing from the Heart: Wu Yu-Ying Calligraphy Exhibition," hosted by the Yunlin County Government Cultural Affairs and Tourism Department and co-organized by the Luminary Buddhist Education Foundation, will grandly open from November 15 (Saturday) to November 30 (Sunday), 2025, at the first-floor exhibition hall of the Douliu Cultural Affairs and Tourism Department (No. 310, Sec. 3, Daxue Rd., Douliu City). An opening ceremony will be held at 10:00 AM on November 16, inviting locals and art enthusiasts to experience the beauty of calligraphy and the profound charm of culture. The exhibition theme "Ink Dancing from the Heart" symbolizes calligrapher Wu Yu-Ying's approach of using her heart as a brush and ink as a dance, integrating her life journey into the art of calligraphy. Teacher Wu has served in the public sector for many years, always upholding integrity and professionalism. She stated: "Calligraphy taught me to quiet my mind and see the negative space of life between the brush and ink." For her, creation is not only an artistic expression but also a path to self-cultivation and a tranquil corner of life. Regarding the genesis of her creation, Teacher Wu shared that she was deeply inspired by the vows of her mentors during a Buddhist study camp, which sparked her wish to "promote kindness through calligraphy and do good through art," leading to her decision to hold a solo exhibition. The exhibition preparation took several months; from photography and catalog production to venue setup, friends and fellow practitioners collaborated to complete everything, confirming the beautiful belief that "when kind thoughts arise, benefactors appear." This exhibition features nearly a hundred works, covering various calligraphic styles such as Oracle Bone Script, Bronze Inscriptions, Seal Script, Clerical Script, Semi-Cursive Script, Cursive Script, and Regular Script. The brushstrokes are vigorous yet graceful, with varying shades of ink creating a dynamic interplay, showcasing the spiritual essence of traditional calligraphy and the warmth of a modern female creator. Teacher Wu uses the themes "Following the Heart's Desire," "Expressing from the Heart," and "Re-creation" to convey her creative beliefs of "never forgetting one's original intention," "passing on the legacy with a dedicated heart," and "the Bodhi mind." Calligraphy is a treasure of Chinese culture, embodying the aesthetics of characters and the wisdom of the spirit. "Ink Dancing from the Heart" is not only an artistic feast but also a journey of tranquility.
