[Hunter School: A Cultural Education Base for Inheriting the Hunter's Spirit] The Hunter School was founded in 2004 by the Paiwan writer Sakinu Ahronglong, located on the back mountain of the Lalauran tribe in Taimali, Taitung. Its establishment aimed to address the challenge of existing educational systems gradually alienating indigenous cultures, by conveying the core values of hunter culture through environmental experiences and life education. The "Hunter's Spirit" advocated by the school emphasizes the wisdom of coexisting with nature, understanding how to listen to the language of the land, rain, and mountains, learning the values of sharing and communal living, and passing this spirit on to future generations. [Core Values and Educational Practices] The school's core values are embodied in three main philosophies: "Be kind to people, have a sense of aesthetics, and be sensitive to the environment and land." This education not only imparts cultural skills but also aims to cultivate students' sensitivity towards environmental protection and social responsibility. Its educational practices are diverse, including: 1. Cultural Education: Offering cultural courses, women's mountain forest courses, and youth camps, transmitting hunter cultural values, suitable for students of different ages and backgrounds. 2. Public Engagement: Addressing environmental issues and fostering community dialogue through activities such as "Singing for the Land" and "Wild Boar Council." 3. Youth Connection: Organizing Paiwan youth conferences and inter-tribal gatherings to discuss issues and unite the strength of young people. 4. International Cultural Exchange: Leading Taiwanese indigenous youth overseas to learn about the operational models of other indigenous organizations and broaden their international perspectives. [Founder and Cultural Heritage] Sakinu's literary work, "Wild Boar, Flying Squirrel, Sakinu," is not only widely renowned but also serves as a designated textbook for Harvard University's Chinese language courses. He uses his own experiences to demonstrate how education can reconnect people with the land, helping students establish self-identity. Sakinu believes that such education allows children to grow mighty trees and rivers from within, shaping unique life characteristics. [Reconstruction and Innovation] A fire in 2019 destroyed the founder's home, which also served as the Hunter School's base. However, Sakinu did not give up and continued to pursue his vision, allowing the school to establish its own base on the back mountain and inviting artists to join, integrating culture, art, and nature deeply through installation art. Multiple buildings have now been completed. The design of these spaces incorporates Paiwan architectural elements and sustainable principles, balancing cultural tradition with modern needs, and considering typhoon resistance, disaster preparedness, and green energy applications. These include Dapeng House (a gathering space resembling a majestic eagle spreading its wings, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, combining modern architecture with traditional craftsmanship), Haohao Classroom (an educational space specifically designed for women, supporting female students in exploring themselves and nature), and Gongshefang (an archery craft learning place that combines traditional skills with modern educational needs). [A Sustainable Vision for Education] "The land and nature are borrowed from our children." Through courses and activities, the school not only conveys the concepts of respecting nature and caring for the land but also inspires participants to cultivate aesthetic appreciation and environmental awareness, realizing a future of sustainability and harmonious coexistence. The Hunter School is not just a base for cultural education but also a modernized experimental ground that embodies the Paiwan spirit, building a bridge between nature and culture while balancing respect for tradition and modern innovation.
