Gongdong Church: A Gem of Taiwanese Modernist Architecture Gongdong Church is situated within the campus of Gongdong Technical High School, founded in 1960 by Father Jakob Hilber (1917–1985). It stands as one of Taiwan's significant examples of modernist architecture. Designed by Swiss architect Justus Dahinden (1925–2020), the church was built using exposed concrete, featuring a minimalist exterior resembling Noah's Ark. Its interior design emphasizes the beauty of natural light and lines, echoing the style of master architect Le Corbusier (1887–1965), earning it the moniker 'Taiwan's Ronchamp Chapel'. Completed in 1960, it predates other notable Taiwanese modern structures like Luce Memorial Chapel and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. In 2017, it was recognized by the 'World Monuments Fund' as the top 'Modern Architecture' site. Founding of the Church and Development of Gongdong Technical High School Father Jakob Hilber, originally from Switzerland, arrived in Taitung in 1953 and dedicated himself to improving local livelihoods. He raised 150,000 Swiss francs to establish Gongdong Technical High School in 1960, introducing the Swiss apprenticeship education model. From its founding until 1974, he invited 21 vocational teachers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland to impart practical skills. This made Gongdong Technical High School a pioneer in Taiwan's vocational education, cultivating a large number of skilled professionals and laying the foundation for the development of Taiwan's furniture industry. Gongdong Church was the first building on campus, featuring highly creative functional design. The first floor housed a practical workshop, the second and third floors served as student dormitories, and the church itself was located on the top floor, symbolizing the supremacy of faith. The church's stained-glass windows are vibrant, with an artistic style that breaks from tradition, showcasing a strong spirit of innovation. Restoration and Historical Preservation Due to the rainy climate and the 921 Earthquake, Gongdong Church's structure was damaged and it was once designated as an unsafe building. In 2003, the Taitung County Government registered it as a historic building, and restoration work subsequently began with donations from alumni and government subsidies. Starting in 2017, legislators and the Ministry of Culture actively sought funding, completing the first phase of restoration (totaling 24 million NTD), which was finished in 2023. The second phase of the restoration project was also approved in 2023, with a total budget of 19.98 million NTD, allocated for structural inspections, exhibition facilities, and landscape improvements. The plan also aims to transform the church into a historical heritage exhibition space, preserving and sharing local cultural stories. Profound Significance of the Architecture Gongdong Church is not only a gem of architectural art but also carries deep implications for education and religion. Father Jakob Hilber, with his selfless love and dedication, brought hope and a future to the children of the Taitung area. His spirit touched countless lives, making him a role model for educators. Today, Gongdong Church stands quietly on campus, bearing witness to this moving history and continuing to inspire future generations to contemplate and pursue education, faith, and art.
