As the birthplace of Budaixi (hand puppet theater), Yunlin showcases deep cultural roots and historical significance. The origins of Budaixi are closely intertwined with the pioneering journey of early settlers who crossed the sea to Taiwan. It embodies the spirit of these ancestors overcoming difficulties and seeking cultural solace in a new land, thus becoming a uniquely Taiwanese traditional performing art. In the mid-20th century, Budaixi further transcended its traditional confines. Through television broadcasts, it reached a new peak of development, sparking a cultural phenomenon where people would forgo sleep and meals to follow the shows, thereby initiating a new era that integrated traditional Taiwanese art with modern technology. As a vital venue for Budaixi culture, the Yunlin Puppet Theater Museum is housed within the former county magistrate's office building from the Japanese colonial period. This building itself is both a historical testament and a paradigm of the fusion of humanities and aesthetics, providing a space rich in historical depth for the preservation and transmission of Budaixi culture, thus highlighting Yunlin's pivotal role in Taiwan's cultural heritage. The function of the Yunlin Puppet Theater Museum extends beyond merely preserving the cultural memory of Budaixi; it also serves as a bridge for education, cultural promotion, and community connection. By collecting historical materials on Budaixi, we systematically organize and display puppets, scripts, and related artifacts from different eras, showing visitors how Budaixi has evolved alongside Taiwan's societal development. Concurrently, the museum showcases exquisite Budaixi works, including puppets from various generations, stage designs, and performance costumes, integrating multimedia interactive technologies to allow visitors to delve deeply into the cultural stories behind Budaixi. Furthermore, the Yunlin Puppet Theater Museum actively connects with local communities, inviting residents to participate in the preservation and promotion of Budaixi culture. Regular cultural activities held at the museum, such as parent-child Budaixi DIY workshops, community performance exchange programs, and seasonal exhibitions, not only enrich community cultural life but also strengthen residents' sense of identity with local culture. We are committed to transforming the museum into a core of community culture, using Budaixi as a cultural symbol to connect local memories, foster community consensus, and further achieve the sustainable inheritance and innovation of Budaixi culture.
