Nantou Cinema, founded in 1921, is Taiwan's only remaining centennial cinema still in operation. This cinema carries the collective memories of local residents, witnessing the cultural and historical development of the Nantou area, from early stage shows to modern theatrical films. The cinema's architecture is unique, with its exterior restored to its 1966 appearance, and its interior integrating modern facilities, blending tradition with innovation. It serves as a model for combining local cultural preservation with modern entertainment. The cultural story of this cinema originates from a deeply emotional commitment and promise. After the 921 earthquake, despite experiencing ten years of losses, the family chose to persist in operating Nantou Cinema. The third-generation operator continues the grandmother's spirit of 'giving back to the community,' striving to transform the cinema into a core hub for local culture and economy. The operating team adheres to the concept of 'coexistence of new and old,' not only preserving the historical value of the cinema but also redefining the viewing experience through innovative activities and thematic integration, making Nantou Cinema a representative of cultural inheritance and innovative fusion. Nantou Cinema is not just a building; it's a cultural bridge, connecting local characteristics with modern imagery. In the past four years under the third-generation's leadership, the cinema has facilitated new forms of interaction between traditional culture and the public through activities such as 'Deities Watching Movies' and 'Filmmakers Dialoguing with the Community.' From environmental education films like 'The Salamander Has Arrived' and 'The Vanishing Purple Crow Butterfly,' to promoting local culture with films like 'Xuantian Shangdi on the Car Roof,' the cinema innovatively connects local stories, community resources, and film screenings, attracting coverage from dozens of media outlets and tens of millions of social media impressions. The cinema's efforts are also reflected in its box office performance and community support. When the cinema announced ticket price adjustments, local residents spontaneously called for 'raising prices even more, so the cinema can continue to exist,' demonstrating the deep affection and support the community has for this centennial cinema. With its unique historical background, steadfast cultural mission, and highly creative management approach, Nantou Cinema has become the most representative cultural landmark in Nantou City. We hope that through the Ministry of Culture's Top 100 Cultural Bases Program, we can further continue the cinema's story and ensure that the cultural memories of this land continue to shine brightly.
