Birdwatching can be incredibly simple with just a bicycle and a pair of binoculars. The Lanyang River Estuary, located near Donggang in Yilan, is a convergence point for three rivers – the Yilan River, Dongshan River, and Lanyang River. This creates a typical estuarine alluvial fan, where accumulated sand dunes form marshlands. Consequently, it's a frequent habitat for various waterbirds, alongside fish species like eel fry, and stands as a popular international birdwatching destination. The IUCN's Asian Wetland Survey even recognizes it as 'one of Taiwan's twelve major wetlands.' The period from October to April of the following year is prime for migratory birds wintering here and for visitors to birdwatch, with activity peaking from November to March. As Taiwan's most crucial waterbird waystation, the Lanyang River Estuary has historically recorded an impressive 236 bird species. The Lanyang Plain, characterized by its mountainous backdrop and coastal frontage, boasts numerous wetlands and sandbars. Its strategic central position on the Pacific Flyway makes it an essential resting stop for migratory birds traveling vast distances north and south, truly a haven for birdwatching enthusiasts. During the spring northward migration, waves of shorebirds can be observed arriving from the south and continuing their journey north. Each year brings 'amazing' sightings of rare birds that either temporarily reside or pass through, including the Black-faced Spoonbill, Greater White-fronted Goose, Greylag Goose, Common Crane, Black Stork, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Little Egret, Spot-billed Duck, Common Teal, and Northern Pintail, among others. Furthermore, gulls can be seen here year-round, making it the site with the highest diversity of gull species nationwide. During the annual bird migration season, many bird lovers flock here with companions and families, equipped with binoculars, to meticulously observe wild birds in flight. Visitors can also frequently hear the rhythmic crashing of waves, marvel at the ever-changing 'water dance' of the sea spray, and gaze at Guishan Island in the distance. It is highly recommended to follow the coastal cycling path, enjoying a leisurely bike ride while birdwatching and taking in the scenic views.
