The most distinctive feature of the fishing village is its 'stone houses', a prime example of utilizing local materials such as sandstone, bamboo, or thatch for construction. In the early days, villagers built these stone houses with the mutual help of their neighbors. It's quite interesting to observe how the craftsmanship of the stone and the style of masonry often reveal the owner's economic status, with each house possessing unique characteristics and aesthetic appeal. Mao'ao is fronted by the sea and backed by mountains, where three streams converge before flowing into the sea. If viewed from above, the three streams resemble the character '卯' (mǎo), from which the bay gets its name. Due to its unique bay and cove terrain, this area boasts diverse marine environments and rich marine biological resources, suitable for the growth of abalone, lobsters, Gracilaria (seaweed), and various other marine organisms, also serving as a major source of local income. Fishermen living in this area still preserve traditional fishing techniques and the culture of 'sea women' (diving women), and it's common to see seaweed drying in front of homes or in the village square. Visitors can also experience fishing village cultural tours, Ishihana jelly DIY, intertidal zone ecological observation, and local gourmet meals, gaining a deep understanding of traditional fishing village wisdom and local marine culture. Travelers who enjoy exploring local characteristics should consider a trip to this hidden fishing village. Cycle along the Old Caoling Circular Line into the village, and under the gentle sea breeze, experience its small yet beautiful tranquility and simplicity. Feel the mysterious charm that makes one forget the mundane world, and enjoy a leisurely and comfortable period of quietude.
