Taipei City Government Fire Department Disaster Prevention Science Education Center

In light of the Great Hanshin Earthquake, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck Japan on January 17, 1995, causing 6,430 deaths, over 40,000 injuries, and completely or partially destroying over 510,000 homes, with total losses, including public facilities, estimated at approximately 10 trillion Japanese Yen—making it Japan's second-largest natural disaster after World War II, surpassed only by Typhoon Isewan—the Taipei City Government Fire Department was reorganized on July 10 of the same year (1995). To enhance disaster prevention education for citizens, allow them to experience disasters, and thereby understand the importance of disaster prevention, plans were initiated to establish Taiwan's first Disaster Prevention Science Education Center. To help citizens understand the history and characteristics of various disasters, the Taipei City Government Fire Department Disaster Prevention Science Education Center uses computer, electronic, and mechanical equipment to simulate various disaster scenarios. This allows citizens to actively operate and experience them, naturally integrating emergency evacuation knowledge such as fire prevention, flood prevention, earthquake prevention, and typhoon prevention into their daily lives. Through an 'edutainment' approach, it aims to enhance citizens' disaster response capabilities. It is hoped that after visiting and experiencing the center, visitors will share the acquired disaster prevention knowledge and skills with their friends and family, enabling everyone to be insulated from disasters and stay safe from their threats.
