Dadaocheng Theater

Dadaocheng Theater is located on the 8th and 9th floors of Yongle Market. Before 1908, the site was originally a garden. During the Japanese colonial period, it was rebuilt into a market, which historically housed nearly a thousand fabric stores, making it Taiwan's largest textile center. Dadaocheng was also the cradle for traditional opera, earning it the moniker 'Opera Den'. Dadaocheng Theater aims to perform, promote, and preserve traditional opera. The 9th-floor theater hosts various traditional opera performances such as Taiwanese Opera (Gezaixi), Peking Opera, Nanguan, Beiguan, Hakka Opera, storytelling, and more. The 8th-floor traditional arts hall regularly features Taiwanese glove puppetry, Nanguan, and storytelling programs. The 1st-floor plaza arranges 'Playing in the Arts' cultural and artistic activities. The Theater offers cultural and artistic workshops in spring and autumn, including courses on traditional opera, tea ceremony, fabric arts, and more. It also provides services such as free cultural and artistic lectures and traditional opera film screenings. The 8th-floor corridor exhibition area features a permanent exhibition on Taiwanese glove puppetry and periodic special exhibitions. Groups of ten or more can book guided tours. Rehearsal rooms and multi-functional presentation rooms are also available for rental by arts and cultural groups. Furthermore, the theater plans and executes school outreach performances for traditional opera, school art education inheritance programs, and training and performances for its affiliated youth Taiwanese Opera troupe, systematically passing on traditional opera and cultivating young talent.
