Visitor Essentials

The Medical Humanities Museum was originally the school building of the Faculty of Medicine at Taipei Imperial University during the Japanese colonial period. The earliest construction began in 1907, designed by Japanese architect Juro Kondo, with the main structure completed in 1913. Although it has stood for a century and undergone multiple restorations, most of the original architectural style has been preserved. The building's function evolved with the university's development, serving as classrooms, an administrative center, a hub for medical academic activities nationwide, a base for medical education reform, and a venue for medical humanities education, until it was established as a museum in 2008. The museum's exhibitions are divided into permanent and special exhibitions. Permanent exhibitions include "The Birth of Life," "Where Do Taiwanese Come From," and "Taiwanese and the Struggle Against Disease." Special exhibitions are launched every six months, with the impact and reflections brought by the development of medicine as their core concept, and are also toured to other medical education institutions. The museum's architectural style belongs to the Late French Renaissance. The grand hall, main walls, and columns are adorned with elegant lines and carvings, creating a magnificent ambiance. The hall and corridors feature numerous elegant arcades. The original roof design was Mansard style, covered with slate tiles and copper, with small round windows on the sloping roof. However, a fire occurred in the museum in 1930, destroying the roof, and the subsequent restoration did not preserve its original appearance.
