Historical significance cherished. The station's architectural style is eclectic, built with reinforced concrete, featuring a classical symmetrical design that showcases simplified gables and geometric decorations, combined with a horizontally streamlined modern aesthetic. Chiayi Railway Station serves as the gateway to Chiayi City and is highly connected to its development. Since the completion of the Western Line railway, it has become a regional transportation hub and the focal point of urban development. The station building is a major public edifice representing the locality and holds significant historical meaning. Zhongshan Road, running east-west from the station directly to Chiayi Park, is known as "Dàtōng" (Main Road). Nearby areas all use Chiayi Railway Station as their entry and exit point, making it the geographical center of the city. During Japan's 50-year rule over Taiwan, the Western Line railway was built to facilitate governance and develop abundant natural resources. Chiayi Railway Station propelled Chiayi City's vigorous development from the 'Cross Street' layout of the Qing Dynasty era. The Western Line railway divided Chiayi City into two; the front station area experienced booming commercial development, with most commercial districts located on its southeast side, while the vast northwestern area behind the station saw only limited development. The platform canopy, uniquely constructed by bending I-beam frames similar to those used for railway tracks, is quite distinctive. It once served as a station for passenger, freight, sugar, and timber transport, demonstrating diverse functions and significant importance. Historical Snippets: In Meiji 29 (1896), a single-story wooden station was built in the style of a Japanese tiled hip roof and shiplap exterior walls. In Showa 8 (1933), it was rebuilt into the existing station building. Chiayi Railway Station is a major station along the Western Line railway and also the starting point of the Alishan Forest Railway, making its operations very busy. The station's spacious site allows for future underground renovation projects to proceed while preserving original sections. The lobby and waiting rooms are ample, capable of accommodating the increasing number of passengers purchasing tickets and waiting daily. It was the primary site where Taiwanese elites were executed during the 228 Incident in 1947.
