A Thriving Green Haven – The Arboretum. Established in Meiji 41 (1908), this arboretum covers approximately 8.6 hectares and is located on the northeast side of Chiayi Park. Originally designated as a trial ground for tropical economic tree species, it initially functioned as a nursery and experimental site for rubber saplings. Later, it was repurposed to cultivate various tropical economic tree species and subsequently managed as a mother tree garden, affiliated with the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute under the Council of Agriculture. As a forestry research institute, and because Chiayi lies within the Tropic of Cancer zone, it conducts various tropical and subtropical afforestation experiments. Early introductions included over a hundred species of economic trees from various parts of Southeast Asia, such as the Brazil rubber tree, Indian rosewood, blackboard tree (Alstonia scholaris), and mahogany. These were planted in clusters of single species without a systematic zoning plan. Currently, the arboretum cultivates 140 species of trees, belonging to 47 families and 107 genera, including famous species like mahogany, Hoop Pine (Araucaria cunninghamii), blackboard tree, and Brazil rubber tree. After a century of growth, the arboretum is now filled with towering trees. Its natural simplicity fully embodies the tranquil atmosphere of a forest. It is an important [recreational green space] within Chiayi City, and a highly valued 'urban botanical garden' in Taiwan. It serves multiple functions, including nature conservation, academic research, educational visits, and recreational activities, making it an ideal spot to wander through the 'world of plants'. Within the arboretum stands an ancient and rustic stele, one of the 'Eight Scenes of Chiayi' known as 'Linchang Fengqing' (Forest Serenity), which narrates the esteemed reputation enjoyed by this garden. Under the lush canopy, winding paths beckon. The verdant shade, interspersed with 'lover's benches', occasionally sees couples posing for wedding photos. Visitors coming for 'forest bathing' are ceaseless. There is no worldly hustle and bustle, only nature enthusiasts and the sounds of wind and birds, weaving a moving symphony.
