Xuanxu Shangtian Temple primarily worships Mazu. It is said that more than two hundred years ago, Yan Siqi from Meizhou respectfully brought the statue of Meizhou Er-Ma (Second Mazu) here. Legend has it that Yan Siqi gathered people in the Shuishang area and extensively preached about Mazu's immense divine powers, claiming that all immigrants who wished to sail to Taiwan, if they carried her incense and talismans, would be protected and arrive safely in Taiwan. In light of this, Yan Siqi brought the statue of Er-Ma with him on his ship to Taiwan and established it in Bengang. He then settled in Pumao Township, Sanjiepu, Shuishang, where he reclaimed barren land, hunted, and lived a primitive life. He later guided nearby villagers in production, leading to a temporary improvement in their public order and living conditions. At that time, the residents of Shuiqutou Street (now Shuishang) greatly admired this. Several local gentry members discussed building a Mazu temple in the area, and their proposal received widespread support. When the temple construction was completed, the local gentry discovered that the Mazu temple was coincidentally located in the central area of the 28 villages, resembling the 28 celestial constellations shining brightly over Zhuluo (now Chiayi County). After seeking Mazu's divine guidance, it was named "Xuanxu Shangtian Temple." Additionally, local residents and the general public commonly refer to it as "Shuishang Mazu Temple." Inside the temple, there is an ancient well over 300 years old. The spring water from this well has been continuously flowing, clear and clean. The temple management specifically installed certified electrolytic water equipment and sent water samples to the county environmental protection bureau for testing. The water meets drinking water standards, so the public can drink it with peace of mind. Furthermore, Shangtian Temple also preserves an ancient stele whose inscription is said to bear witness to ancient fraud schemes.
