Wuguking is also known as Shennong the Great Emperor (the Divine Farmer). As Taiwan's foundation was agriculture, primarily rice and grain cultivation, the God of Five Grains was instrumental in promoting these crops. Consequently, he is highly regarded and respected by future generations. Every year on his birthday, the 26th day of the fourth lunar month, grand and lively ceremonies are held. The temple was established during the Kangxi Emperor's reign in the Qing Dynasty and has a history spanning several centuries. It was originally built by local residents to pray for bountiful harvests. Today, the temple enjoys immense popularity, and most of the land for National Chung Cheng University was donated by this very temple.
