Visitor Essentials
Lalu Island is a small hill located in the center of Sun Moon Lake in Nantou, serving as the ancestral spirit island for the Thao people. 'Lalu' is the Thao name for this mountain, meaning 'sacred mountain in the heart.' Lalu Island resembles an isolated island in a vast ocean, and also a mysterious island floating in the sky. Combined with the beautiful blue-green waters of Sun Moon Lake, its breathtaking scenery leaves people spellbound and mesmerized. Lalu Island is a Thao heritage site, imbued with a strong Thao cultural atmosphere. The Thao people have also planted Bischofia javanica trees on the island, symbolizing the continuous inheritance of their culture through generations. Although it is currently designated as an indigenous area and general visitors cannot freely access the island, one can still admire the dreamy beauty of the floating island from afar at Xuanguang Temple on the shores of Sun Moon Lake.
