It is a section of marble cliff within Taroko Gorge. The cliff face features numerous small holes and cavities, which are potholes formed by prolonged erosion from river water and groundwater. Swifts and swallows often forage or nest among the cliffs, creating the spectacular sight of 'a hundred swallows chirping in the valley,' thus giving the area its name, 'Swallow Grotto'.
