Green Island

Green Island, formerly known as Fire Island, is located approximately 33 kilometers east of Taitung City in the ocean, covering an area of 16.2 square kilometers. It is an island formed by volcanic agglomerate, and due to long-term weathering and sea erosion, it has formed a diverse and winding coastal landscape. Its magnificent and unique rock formations, towering cliffs, clean white sandy beaches, lush green meadows, unique underwater hot springs, rugged coral reefs, beautiful underwater world, and abundant plant life provide excellent conditions that have transformed Green Island, a secluded and independent small island, into an aquatic paradise in eastern Taiwan. Starting in 1960, the government actively developed Green Island. In 1977, five plans were launched to improve the lives of Green Island residents, enhancing island facilities such as the airport, fishing port, and round-island highway. In recent years, through the joint efforts of the Taitung County Government, the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration of the Tourism Administration, and the Green Island Township Office, Green Island has been developed into a tourist island off the coast of Taiwan, making it the best choice for Taiwanese citizens to engage in water recreation activities. However, driven by the concept of ecological conservation, eco-tourism, which combines ecology and humanities, has gradually become the mainstream mode of tourism. The Green Island Visitor Center, established by the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration of the Tourism Administration, is a magnificent facility. Located at the exit of Green Island Airport, it serves as the first stop for touring Green Island. The lobby on the first floor displays living utensils used by early residents. The exhibition room provides detailed introductions to Green Island's ecology and scenery with rich illustrations and text. The audio-visual room regularly screens exciting introductory films, capturing the beauty of the underwater world in its entirety. Visitors stopping at the visitor center before their tour can obtain a wealth of valuable information.
