Hengchun's ancient place names were "Langjiao" or "Langjiao." It wasn't until the Qing Dynasty that it was renamed "Hengchun" due to its pleasant climate, where the four seasons feel like spring. The Hengchun Old City, located in the center of the town, is remarkably well-preserved. Its four ancient and historically rich city gates form an ideal tourist circuit. Visitors can start from the West Gate, walk to Tianhou Temple, Houdong Mountain, and the South Gate, then turn towards the East Gate, where they can climb up to overlook a panoramic view of Hengchun Town. About 100 meters outside Hengchun's East Gate, at the Chuhuo Bridge, visitors can observe flames emerging from the ground. This phenomenon is caused by natural gas escaping from underground and burning day and night.
