Visitor Essentials
The Wanjin Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is located in Wanjin Village, Pingtung County. It was founded by Spanish priest Father Fernando Sainz during the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty. Since its renovation in 1960, it has maintained its current appearance and is Taiwan's oldest church. It was also designated a "Basilica" by Pope John Paul II, a status second only to the major basilicas of the Vatican in Rome. Inside, next to the cross on the roof, there is a small stone tablet inscribed with the characters "奉旨" (Fèngzhǐ), meaning "by imperial decree," which was granted by the Qing court at the time.
