The name "Kenting" originated in 1877 when the Qing government's Pacification Bureau recruited a large number of strong men from the Chaozhou area of Guangdong to clear and cultivate the land here. To commemorate these pioneers who "carved out paths through brambles and opened up mountains for settlement" (墾 means to cultivate/clear, 丁 means strong men), the area was named "Kenting". Kenting National Park is located on the southern tip of the Hengchun Peninsula in southern Taiwan. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, it is one of the few national parks in Taiwan that encompasses both land and marine areas, and it is also the only tropical region on Taiwan's main island. Its unique topography, rich flora and fauna, and distinctive local customs make it not only a natural museum for conservation, research, and environmental education but also a pleasant destination for leisure travel. The park's exquisite and diverse landscapes, such as Nanren Lake, Longluantan Lake, Dajianshi Mountain, and Sail Rock, led Kenting to become Taiwan's first officially established national park. With its abundant natural resources, warm climate, pleasant scenery, and convenient transportation, Kenting attracts approximately four million visitors each year who come to experience nature; its resources are precious and rich. Due to its tropical climate, there is a wide variety of plant species, including many representative plant zones that require careful attention. This rich plant environment fosters a diverse array of wildlife in Kenting, such as Sika deer, Formosan macaques, and Grey-faced buzzards, adding vitality to Kenting's beautiful scenery. Visit to stargaze, listen to the waves, make good use of the park's trail system and visitor centers, and embark on a journey to Kenting National Park that is both intellectual and emotional.
