Shanping Forest Ecological Science Park

Shanping is located in Maolin District, Kaohsiung City, at an altitude of 750 meters. It is situated in the southernmost branch range of the Central Mountain Range and boasts a remarkably complete forest ecosystem. Currently under the jurisdiction of the Liukuei Branch of the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute, it is a major birdwatching hub in southern Taiwan, known as the 'Birdwatcher's Paradise.' (A total of 134 bird species have been recorded, with resident birds accounting for two-thirds of Taiwan's total resident bird population.) At Shanping, visitors can explore slate houses, a bamboo species garden, an arboretum, a Nanmu display area, a nursery and landscape plant exhibition area, a variegated plant display area, a Taiwan stout camphor scion collection garden, the Tengchuan Area of the Botanical Garden, a stream ecology exhibition area, and more. Additionally, 139 species of butterflies are also not to be missed.
