Former British Consulate at Takao

Built in 1865, this site boasts over 150 years of history. Its unique geographical location, perched on the mountains of Sizihwan (Xizi Bay) where the sea and sky merge, offers naturally stunning views. It leans against Mount Dagushan, overlooks large ships entering and exiting Kaohsiung Port, provides views of the Sizihwan sunset to the right, and embraces a panoramic vista of Kaohsiung Port to the left. The building itself features a Post-Renaissance Baroque architectural style, characterized by sculpted stone balustrades and round arch designs. Having witnessed a century and a half of history, its splendor has been restored after renovation, showcasing British elegance. The interior also houses a rich collection of artistic treasures, making it a historic consulate that is beautiful both inside and out. This British-style building was designed by an Englishman, and all dimensions were based on British yards and feet. The exterior walls feature continuous semicircular arches; the arches at the corners are smaller while the wall pillars are larger, providing structural reinforcement. The building is equipped with fireplaces and a basement. The overall exterior, with its continuous semicircular arches, creates a very rhythmic visual effect. The red bricks for the consulate were transported from Xiamen, and the craftsmen were hired from mainland China. The circular arches of the corridor, illuminated by the setting sun, appear even more ancient and charming. Bamboo-joint-shaped downspouts are a characteristic feature of Western-style buildings from the late Qing Dynasty, and the double brick columns at the corners ensure greater stability. Beginning in 1986 (the 75th year of the Republic of China), the building underwent authentication, research, and restoration. Currently, its interior has been converted into the Kaohsiung Museum of History and Culture, exhibiting documents, photographs, and models related to the pioneering and modern history of Takao (Kaohsiung). Visitors can not only explore the rich collections inside but also gaze westward at the distant ships on the sea, look eastward towards the city and port, and explore the winding, well-preserved ancient path on the south side, with captivating scenery evident at every turn.
