Visitor Essentials

Shoushan, located in the southwestern district of Kaohsiung City, is a north-south trending coral reef hill. Formerly known as Qilin Mountain, Maijin Mountain, Dagou Mountain, or Dagu Mountain, it serves as Kaohsiung City's natural landmark. Shoushan is an easily accessible sacred mountain within Kaohsiung City, rich in natural resources. It was the original homeland of the early Pingpu indigenous people's Dagou community. The mountain is densely forested and features attractions such as Shoushan Park, Martyrs' Shrine, the Zoo, Qianguang Temple, Faxing Temple, and Yuanheng Temple. Following the path next to Shoushan Zoo leads to the limestone cave area of Shoushan Scenic Area. Venturing through the winding and narrow limestone caves, visitors can see stalagmites, stalactites, and other speleothem formations, witnessing the wonders and mysteries of nature's creation. Shoushan Park boasts lush greenery and well-connected circular mountain roads, and from the summit, one can overlook Kaohsiung Port, enjoy the sunset over Sizihwan, and admire Kaohsiung City's nightscape. The park is also home to the "Taiwan Macaque Nature Reserve," where groups of macaques dart and play among the trees; if you're lucky, you might even witness their agile leaps. In addition to the cute macaques, Shoushan Zoo houses various rare animals, including large mammals, reptiles, and birds. Next to Shoushan Park is the Martyrs' Shrine, a Chinese palace-style building dedicated to the spirits of the National Revolutionary Martyrs. It is flanked by lush green trees, and ancient pines are planted in front of the shrine. There are also two cannons from the Qing dynasty period for visitors to reflect upon. Its elevated position offers a panoramic view and is one of the best spots to overlook Kaohsiung Port and the city.
