Beigang Chaotian Temple

Beigang Chaotian Temple was formerly known as Tianfei Temple or Tianhou Temple. It was renamed Chaotian Temple to commemorate its spiritual branch from its ancestral temple, Chaotian Pavilion, in Meizhou. Established in 1694 during the Qing Dynasty's Kangxi era, its miraculous efficacy has made it the principal temple for over 300 Mazu temples nationwide, boasting a magnificent appearance. The temple enshrines statues of deities such as the Holy Mother in Heaven (Mazu) and Guanyin Bodhisattva. The temple's beam-and-column structure and wood carvings are all the work of master craftsmen. Examples include the stone carvings of the Four Dragon Kings on the stone balustrade pillars outside the temple plaza, each with a unique posture and majestic presence. Additionally, there is a caisson ceiling (藻井) with an intricate net-like structure formed by dougong (bracket sets) arranged in a cruciform pattern. From the delicate carvings of facial expressions and movements on the window grilles to the magnificent coiling dragon pillars, the craftsmanship of the entire temple is exquisitely refined, undoubtedly a synthesis of religion and artistic masterpieces. Beigang Chaotian Temple enjoys a thriving incense offering year-round. The two most bustling circumambulation (pilgrimage) events each year are the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month and Mazu's birthday on the 23rd day of the third lunar month. The Lantern Festival primarily features lantern competitions. During Mazu's birthday celebrations, devotees and branch temples from various regions successively return to Beigang for pilgrimage, creating a truly grand spectacle. The accompanying procession is marked by thundering gongs and drums, with streets packed with people, marking the pinnacle of the Mazu pilgrimage season. This imbues the entire town of Beigang with a rich religious atmosphere. For accommodation, Chaotian Temple has a pilgrim's dormitory building, which offers communal dormitory rooms for groups. However, during the period from Chinese New Year to the third lunar month, pilgrim traffic is very heavy, so it is advisable to make reservations in advance.
