Xuanguang Temple, Sun Moon Lake

Xuanguang Temple was built in 1955 (the 44th year of the Republic of China). It was originally the temporary enshrined place for the sarira (relics) of Master Xuanzang after they were brought back from Japan. In 1965 (the 54th year of the Republic of China), after Xuanzang Temple was completed, Master Xuanzang's sarira were moved and enshrined there. The temple is located at the land boundary between the Sun Lake and the Moon Lake. Its exterior is designed to resemble Japanese temple architecture. Inside, it enshrines a golden statue of Master Xuanzang, above which hangs a plaque inscribed with 'National Teacher'. It faces the lake with mountains behind it, and is only about ten meters from the lake. There is a pier below the temple, allowing visitors to take a boat to the pier and then ascend the steps to visit.
