Lukang Wenwu Temple

Combining temple, shrine, and academy architecture in one place, arranged in a single horizontal line with the civil and martial structures side by side, it is truly a rare and unique combination throughout Taiwan, representing a blend of cultural education architecture and the worship of the God of Wealth. Wenkai Academy was established in 1824, initiated by local gentry Deng Chuan and An, and sponsored by Lin Wen-jun of Rimao Trading Company. It housed over 20,000 titles and 300,000 volumes, nurturing numerous scholars who passed the imperial examinations (Jinshi, Juren, Xiucai), and served as the cradle of culture in ancient Lukang. Wen Shrine was built in 1806. It once hosted Lukang's earliest cultural and artistic group. The works seen on its two walls today are by famous modern calligraphers from Lukang. Wu Temple was built in 1812. It primarily enshrines the valiant Guan Gong. Legend has it that Guan Gong was skilled in financial management and accounting, leading merchants to revere him as the 'God of Commerce'. Consequently, Wu Temple constantly attracts many worshippers.
