Lukang Tianhou Temple

Lukang was once a natural harbor, fostering frequent trade with mainland China. To ensure safe voyages, devout believers collectively decided to establish the Lukang Tianhou Temple around 1591 to worship Mazu, providing a spiritual sanctuary. This temple is Taiwan's sole shrine dedicated to the Mazu statue from the founding of the Meizhou Ancestral Temple. Meizhou Mazu is celebrated not only for her divine power and flourishing worship but also for the temple's ancient history and magnificent scale. Its architectural structure is particularly splendid and imbued with antique elegance; the carved beams and painted rafters showcase exceptional craftsmanship. The colorful paintings and intricate wood and stone carvings are all exquisitely detailed and miraculously skilled, truly making it a treasury of Taiwanese artistry. Devotees span every corner of Taiwan, and pilgrims flock here continuously year-round. During the peak pilgrimage season, from the first to the third month of the lunar calendar, the crowds are even more immense and impassable.
