Wanggong Fishing Port (Wanggong Fishing Lights Pier)

Wanggong Township is a distinctive fishing village in western Taiwan. Since the "Wanggong Reawakening" National Arts Festival was held, it has fully committed to developing into a recreational fishing village and tourism destination. The township boasts rich cultural heritage, aquaculture, and wetland ecosystems. The "Wanggong Fishing Lights" was formerly one of the eight scenic wonders of Changhua County. Fangyuan Township spans 96.89 square kilometers. Historical records indicate that over 380 years ago, immigrants from Fujian Province crossed the sea to engage in agriculture and fishing, establishing maritime trade with Fujian. The area was initially called "Fanziwa." During the Japanese colonial period, Fanziwa District was renamed Shasan Village, deriving its name from the many sand dunes in the township. A village office was established. After 1945 (the 34th year of the Republic), it came under the jurisdiction of Taichung City. Following local agreements, it was designated Fangyuan Township, which currently comprises 26 villages. The Wanggong area is a quintessential coastal fishing village, renowned nationwide for its oysters. It boasts abundant natural and cultural attractions, including coastal scenery with mangrove forests, waterbirds, fiddler crabs, and mudskippers in the intertidal zone. The area also features the picturesque Wanggong Fishing Port, a lighthouse, sea-watching shacks, and bamboo rafts, alongside local industries like asparagus fields, dairy farms, and aquaculture ponds. The Changhua County Government is currently implementing a "New Urban and Rural Landscape Project" for the Wanggong Port area, aiming to enhance Wanggong's allure and attract numerous tourists to explore its charm. The Hanbao Wetland within the township, second only to the Dadu River estuary, is a renowned sanctuary for waterbirds in central Taiwan. Environmental groups plan to develop it into an ecological park and have previously hosted the "Hanbao Wild Bird Festival," drawing birdwatching enthusiasts in droves. Due to its abundant agricultural and fishery specialties, Fangyuan Township's Wanggong cuisine is also highly favored by foodies. A trip to this fishing village promises a rewarding experience.
