Jiaoxi Hot Spring

Jiaoxi Township is famous for its hot springs and is located in the northeast corner of Yilan County. Over four hundred years ago, Kavalan and Atayal people lived here. In 1796, Wu Sha, a Fujianese, led immigrants to the area and gradually developed it. Jiaoxi eventually became an important town in northern Yilan. The development of Jiaoxi is inseparable from its hot springs. From early times when people built enclosures for bathing, to the Japanese colonial era when Japanese people established public bathhouses and inns, initiating the commercial use of hot springs, and up to recent years when it was designated as a special hot spring tourism zone, hot springs have been used for various agricultural and fishery cultivation and farming. Therefore, hot springs are also a crucial economic lifeline for the prosperity of this area. Jiaoxi Hot Spring is a sodium bicarbonate spring, rich in chemical components such as sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and carbonate ions. It is a rare flatland hot spring in Taiwan. The spring water is clear and odorless, reaching the surface at approximately 58°C. After bathing, the skin feels smooth, soft, and non-sticky. Due to its rich mineral content, whether for soaking, bathing, or processed into mineral water for drinking, it is highly beneficial for health. Visiting Jiaoxi for a hot spring bath has become an important itinerary for travelers. Within a 1.2-kilometer radius of Jiaoxi Railway Station is the local hot spring area, where nearly a hundred hotels, guesthouses, and public baths currently form the unique landscape of a "hot spring village."
