Neidong National Forest Recreation Area

Established in 1984 (Republic of China Year 73), Neidong Forest Recreation Area is located in Xinxian Village, Wulai District, New Taipei City, and is known as "Wawa Valley" (Dolly Valley). Its ecological environment is remarkably well-preserved, representing the low-altitude river and gorge ecosystems of northern Taiwan. The upper reaches of the Nanshi River have carved through the rock face, creating steep and spectacular gorge landscapes that seamlessly connect with the scenery of Wulai Scenic Area. The area boasts numerous waterfalls, most notably the famous three-tiered Xinxian Waterfall within the recreation area and the impressively towering Wulai Waterfall. Ecologically, it is dense with natural broadleaf forests and a rich diversity of birds, frogs, and butterflies. Within the forest recreation area, several kilometers of forest bathing trails are laid out for visitors to enjoy the scenery, birdwatching, fern viewing, and butterfly spotting. Both sides of the trails are lined with lush trees, including broadleaf trees and Japanese cedars, featuring tall trunks and dense foliage. The steep banks along both sides of the river retain a very原始 forest appearance. The humidity in the valley is very high, contributing to the exceptionally rich ecological environment here. The steep slopes are covered with various native plants, and the primitive forest offers an excellent habitat and breeding ground for animals, making it the best birdwatching spot in northern Taiwan. There is also a wide variety of ferns and insects, presenting different biological landscapes throughout the four seasons. The Nanshi River flows through Neidong Forest Recreation Area, with the Neidong River joining it from the south. Ultimately, a series of various-sized mountain waterfalls are formed due to the obstruction by a dam. Among them, Xinxian Waterfall, locally known as "Xinxian Hidden Waterfall," is also called Neidong Waterfall or Wawa Valley Waterfall. It is a three-tiered waterfall with abundant water, cascading powerfully and majestically. On the elevated areas beside the waterfall, well-planned viewing platforms, rest benches, and outdoor classrooms have been built, allowing visitors not only to leisurely admire the cascading waterfall but also to enjoy the relaxing sensation that negative ions bring to both body and mind. Furthermore, Wulai's famous tourist trolley has transitioned from manual pushing to a motorized system. This trolley, like Neidong Recreation Area, is managed by the Taiwan Forest and Nature Conservation Agency, Ministry of Agriculture. Originally used for transporting timber, it now serves as a recreational facility for tourists, covering 1.6 kilometers from Wulai Station to Waterfall Station. The entire ride takes approximately 3-5 minutes, and its distinctive rattling sound adds to the enjoyment, attracting countless tourists.
