Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei

The Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei (MOCA Taipei) is located on Chang'an West Road in Taipei City. Established through the revitalization and adaptive reuse of a historic site, MOCA Taipei officially opened in May 2001 (the 90th year of the Republic Era) to great acclaim, following long-term attention from the local art community. It stands as Taiwan's first art museum dedicated to promoting contemporary art. Looking back, this building, constructed with red bricks and grey tiles, served as Jiancheng Elementary School during the Japanese colonial period. Afterward, the Taipei City Government operated from this site for 40 years. In 1996 (the 85th year of the Republic Era), the former Taipei City Government building was designated as a municipal heritage site. Based on a policy for the adaptive reuse of historic buildings, the main façade of the original structure was restored and renovated specifically for MOCA Taipei, while the two wings were allocated for use as classrooms for Jiancheng Junior High School. The combination of MOCA Taipei and the new Jiancheng Junior High School not only created a globally rare precedent for a museum and a school sharing the same building but is also regarded as extending the historical and cultural axis from Taipei Confucius Temple to Bao'an Temple, thereby stimulating a new opportunity for the overall redevelopment of Datong District. Today, its avant-garde contemporary character, harmoniously reflecting the European styles interpreted by prominent Japanese architects, shapes the museum's unique blend of dimensions and captivating aesthetic.
