Songshan Ciyou Temple

Ciyou Temple was established in 1753 and is the birthplace of the development of the Songshan area. Songshan was once known as Xikou, and the plaque above the main entrance of Songshan Ciyou Temple still reads "Xikou Ciyou Temple". A long time ago, a monk traveled around Xikou, carrying a golden statue of Mazu from Meizhou to solicit donations. Many locals were from his hometown, and people universally revered Mazu, so everyone collectively donated money to build a Mazu temple. After more than ten years of fundraising, construction finally began in 1753 and was completed in 1757. The roof of Ciyou Temple features many sculptures, including figures and leaping green dragons. Legend has it that green dragons can prevent fires, which is why they are commonly used to adorn temple roofs. Entering the main hall, one finds statues of Mazu and layers of "Guangming Deng" (fortune lamps). These lamps are lit by devotees hoping to receive Mazu's blessings. In the right wing, the benevolent and kind Earth God (Tudigong) is enshrined, accompanied by "Wuying Qi" (Five Battalions Flags) and "Huye" (Tiger God). The Wuying Qi broadly represent deities from various directions, while Huye serves as the escorting strength when deities descend to the mortal world. Because of its lingering beastly nature, Huye is looked after by the Earth God. In the left wing, the Goddess of Childbirth (Zhushēng Niángniáng) is enshrined. While typically accompanied by twelve Midwives (Po Jie), Ciyou Temple uniquely features thirteen. The additional figure is Du Yu-niang, a midwife (or obstetrician) who never charged for her services. Out of gratitude for her benevolent deeds, the residents of Xikou sculpted a statue of her, allowing her to receive incense and worship alongside the twelve Po Jie, making this a distinctive feature of Ciyou Temple. Every year in the 4th lunar month, devotees of Ciyou Temple take turns hosting the "Mazu Guolu" (Mazu's Incense Passing) festival to express their gratitude and reverence to Mazu. It is a very lively event.
