Maokong Tea Gardens

Maokong is located southwest of Getou Mountain in Muzha District, on the outskirts of Taipei. The term "Maokong" is related to the valley topography around the Tea Research and Extension Station. Due to the long-term erosion by streams carrying large amounts of sand and gravel, circular or oval-shaped holes formed on the streambed, which are geologically known as "potholes." In Taiwanese Hokkien, they were called "liao-khang" (meaning "creased, full of holes"), until the Japanese colonial period when the area was renamed "Maokong" due to its similar pronunciation. Today's Maokong, however, later developed into a very unique tea tourism industry as student nightlife, driven by its proximity to National Chengchi University's student activity area, brought prosperity to the region. Maokong is renowned worldwide for its Wenshan Baozhong Tea and Tieguanyin Tea, and it is dotted with tea houses of various styles. It offers a charming ambiance day and night. During the day, lush green tea trees and mountain views abound, and its many hiking trails are ideal recreational spots for Taipei citizens. After dusk, Maokong transforms into a captivating and mysterious scene. Every household hangs colorful light bulbs, and tea guests quietly brew tea, chat, and admire the night view, or large groups of young people happily dine and laugh, all of which bring endless vitality to Maokong. Walking uphill along Lane 34, Section 3 of Zhinan Road, you reach an altitude of over 200 meters, which is the highest point in Maokong. The view along the way is expansive. As night falls, twinkling stars and thousands of shimmering lights create a spectacular scene before your eyes. While enjoying fine tea, comfortably gaze down at the night view of the greater Taipei metropolitan area, with a sky full of stars and the moving scenery of countless lights reflecting each other.
