National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

※ The Memorial Hall will be closed to the public from February 26, 2024, to the fourth quarter of 2026, for construction work on the 'Auditorium and Peripheral Facilities Project.' The Sun Yat-sen Cultural Park will remain open as usual and will not be affected. The National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall aims to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen's great character and revolutionary deeds and to propagate his ideas and theories. Its objectives also include promoting social education and fostering cultural development. It is a multi-functional integrated social education institution that combines the features of a museum and a performance hall, and promotes lifelong education for all citizens. It also serves as a comprehensive cultural and artistic center for hosting academic, cultural, and artistic events, providing opportunities for the public to cultivate culture and art, acquire new knowledge, and enjoy leisure and tourism. The government began preparations for the construction of the National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in 1964 (Minguo Year 53). It was completed on May 16, 1972 (Minguo Year 61), and designed by renowned architect Wang Da-hong as an imitation Tang Dynasty-style building with upturned eaves. The majestic and solemn main building, situated in the verdant Sun Yat-sen Park with lush greenery and sparse flowers, has become a brilliant star in eastern Taipei and has brought a new dimension to the nation's culture and arts. In addition to providing a place for people from Taiwan and abroad to pay respects to Dr. Sun Yat-sen, it also serves functions related to cultural and art education, leisure and recreation, and academic research. The National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was originally affiliated with the Taipei City Government. In July 1986 (Minguo Year 75), it was transferred to the Ministry of Education and merged with the Chung-Shan Building on Yangmingshan. Its official name changed from 'Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Administration' to 'National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall'. From May 20, 2012 (Minguo Year 101), it was transferred from the Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Culture. Upon its opening, it primarily served to display Dr. Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary relics and hosted some exhibitions and performances. Today, it is the most multi-functional social education and cultural center in the country. It boasts an internationally renowned National Performance Hall, extensive and elegant exhibition spaces of several thousand pings, a state-of-the-art multimedia cinema, audio-visual center, lecture halls, and Chung-Shan Lecture Hall, a professional library with a collection of over 300,000 books, and the delightful Emerald Lake Performance Area and Sun Yat-sen Park.
