Ximending Commercial District

The name Ximending originated during the Japanese colonial period. At that time, most residents lived within Taipei City, and the Ximen area served as their recreational spot. In 1896, the first theater, "Tokyo-tei" (Tokyo Pavilion), opened here, and in 1922, it was officially named "Ximending." In its early days, Ximending's primary commercial activity revolved around cinemas. Most cinemas at that time were concentrated around Emei Street, Chengdu Road, and Xining South Road, making it the center of Ximending's development. After the Nationalist government relocated to Taiwan in 1949, a large influx of capital poured into the area. In addition to cinemas, department stores and other entertainment venues successively emerged. After the completion of Zhonghua Market (Chunghwa Market), Ximending became Taiwan's largest commercial and entertainment center. In the 1990s, Taipei's commercial and entertainment activities gradually shifted to the East District. Coupled with the demolition of Zhonghua Market and road reorganization, Ximending remained quiet for quite some time. It wasn't until the completion of the MRT Bannan Line (Blue Line) that Zhonghua Road, under the planning of the Taipei City Government, transformed into Taipei's "Champs-Élysées." Moreover, various plazas and event spaces sprung up like mushrooms after rain. Every weekend and holiday, crowds gather here for cultural, sports, music performances, and other activities, once again drawing business opportunities and crowds back to the West District. Today's Ximending not only bears witness to history but also leads the new generation of pop culture. Many nostalgic middle-aged and older people revisit their memories here, while stylishly dressed younger generations compete to show off their unique flair. Two completely different lifestyles converge and interact here, satisfying the needs of diverse groups.
