Lize Sand Dunes Coast

In the Lanyang legend of 'Turtle and Snake Guarding the Seaport,' the turtle refers to Guishan Island, and the snake refers to the continuous sand dunes, of which Lize is a part. The coastline of the Lanyang Plain, affected by sea erosion, forms a slightly concave, bow-shaped coast. However, the Lanyang River, originating from the valleys between the Xueshan and Central Mountain Ranges, and the Dongshan River carry large amounts of sediment into the Pacific Ocean with strong erosional forces, transporting abundant materials. This, combined with the northeast monsoon that visits for over half of each year, causes the coastline to protrude eastward, forming a pointed, beak-like delta. Its vigorous and continuous depositional activity has led to the formation of coastal sand dunes at Lize Beach, reaching tens of meters in height. Because the coastal sand dunes stretch across the landscape, making it difficult for rivers to flow into the sea, water accumulates in the low-lying depressions between the dune ridges due to poor drainage, forming wetlands behind them. The dunes are covered with plants such as silvergrass, screwpines, and acacia trees. The beach is as smooth as if polished with wax, and this, combined with the verdant strip atop the dunes, creates a magnificent spectacle.
