Wushierjia Bird Watching Area

Why is it called Wushierjia? Legend has it that it was named because the cultivated land here historically covered an area of 52 jia! Wushierjia Wetland was originally an old channel of the Dongshan River. Its low-lying terrain meant it was perennially waterlogged, forming large expanses of marshland. This created an excellent paddy field environment, which in turn developed into a unique and rich wetland ecosystem – a paradise for birds. Every winter, it attracts a large number of migratory birds to spend the winter and forage. The best time for bird watching is from October to December each year, and in April during spring. Besides winter migratory birds, one can often spot birds like mallards, northern shovelers, and grey herons spreading their wings and landing here. Over the years, the Wushierjia Bird Watching Area has recorded more than a hundred bird species, including many unique ones such as the greylag goose, greater white-fronted goose, Baikal teal, Brent goose, great crested grebe, and black-necked grebe. It is a must-visit sanctuary for bird enthusiasts! In addition to bird watching, in recent years, this area has also become a secret spot for summer flower viewing. Due to frequent flooding in the past, the earth embankments were damaged. Farmers then planted hundreds of Powder-puff Trees (Barringtonia racemosa) to protect the dikes. When the flowering season arrives, the Powder-puff Tree blossoms at night like fireworks on trees, dazzling and becoming more beautiful as the night deepens. This spectacular summer night scene is a favorite among many travelers. The beauty of Wushierjia Wetland is suitable for all seasons. Throughout the year, you can arrange a Lanyang cycling trip at any time to enjoy the rural wetland scenery. In summer, you can witness the 'one-night beauty' – the fireworks-like display brought by the Powder-puff Trees. In autumn and winter, you can cycle along the banks to admire the autumn rice paddies and the beauty of natural ecology.
