Wuweigang Waterbird Conservation Area

Wuweigang, despite its name 'Wuweigang' (meaning 'Tail-less Port'), is actually a coastal marsh wetland. It was originally a river located in the southeastern part of the Lanyang Plain, but due to siltation at its estuary, the water flow could not drain, hence its name 'Wuweigang'. This 102-hectare marsh boasts rich aquatic flora and fauna. Its location on a crucial migration route for birds in autumn and winter attracts many wintering birds to feed and rest. In 1993, it officially became Taiwan's first waterbird protected area. This vast and expansive wintering habitat for geese and ducks has recorded over 170 bird species, including both waterbirds and mountain birds. Starting in November each year, thousands of geese and ducks gradually appear and settle here. The Eurasian Teal is the most numerous, followed by the Eastern Spot-billed Duck and the Northern Shoveler. Nearby paddy fields and fish farms host various species of sandpipers and plovers, while woodlands and dry fields are home to common lowland birds. Rare migratory birds and vagrants are often spotted at the Xincheng River estuary. This rich and abundant birdlife makes it a birdwatching paradise, with the best birdwatching season running from October to February of the following year. During this period, many bird enthusiasts can be seen braving the cold wind, bringing professional equipment to observe and photograph. The management office has also specially established birdwatching platforms, observation trails, and bird hides within the conservation area, allowing visitors to leisurely stroll while looking for wild birds. For those who enjoy capturing the elegant and adorable postures of waterbirds with their cameras, the birdwatching cabins offer a quiet place to wait for the perfect shot. [Note] For visitors less familiar with migratory birds, enthusiastic volunteers from the 'Wuweigang Cultural and Educational Promotion Association' are available to provide guided tours and explanations.
