Magang Intertidal Zone

Years of relentless pounding and erosion by ocean waves have sculpted the Northeast Coast into a rich and diverse geological landscape, where charming landforms abound. The Magang wave-cut platform, formed by the erosion of sea cliffs, has, amidst the ebb and flow of tides, become one of Taiwan's most ecologically diverse intertidal zones, particularly rich in green algae. The best way to explore the intertidal zone's ecology is on foot. Walking along the natural path, about a hundred meters in length and width, you'll "chance upon" many small creatures! In the tidal pools or under rocks, you'll find small fish fry, sea anemones, Nerite snails, topshells, moon snails, sea hares, crabs, and many more, as well as slowly moving small hermit crabs. Near the low-tide mark, small sea mosses, coral algae, sea anemones, barnacles, and sea squirts grow. The best part is that it offers different charms throughout the four seasons, and intertidal creatures can be observed all year round. In spring, the wave-cut platform is covered with vibrant green sea lettuce and various algae, like a natural emerald carpet. Although there isn't much green algae scenery in summer, walking is relatively easier. Strolling through the Magang Intertidal Zone, you'll find small creatures everywhere, experiencing what it means for 'each tidal pool to be a world unto itself,' making it the best season for family ecological tours.
