Budai began developing salt fields during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. By the 3rd year of the Daoguang period, the wealthy salt merchant Wu Shangxin further expanded the salt pans by a hundred jia, laying the foundation for Budai's sun-dried salt industry. During the Japanese colonial period, Budai's salt fields became even more mature, making Budai Port an important salt transportation hub for exporting Budai salt to China and Japan.
