Niugangling Trail

The entrance to the Niugangling Trail is located to the right of the Guanyinshan Visitor Center, marked by a prominent giant stone sculpture titled 'Descendants of the Dragon.' The trail is 753 meters long, featuring a sturdy and smooth path that alternates between stone slabs and steel-framed boardwalks. Along the way, visitors can observe natural ecosystems primarily composed of herbaceous and vine plants, as well as large shade trees like acacia and red nanmu. Golden sunlight filters through the trees, creating a relaxed and pleasant stroll. From the entrance, the trail ascends steeply for about 500 meters towards the 'Beacon Hill.' After reaching the ridge, it levels into a gently sloping saddle. An observation deck to the east offers expansive views. This spot was historically the starting point for lighting signal fires during the Taipei City Battle in the Yiwei Year (1895), filled with historical traces that evoke a sense of ancient times. From the saddle to the trail's end, approximately 300 meters, the path is a gently sloping gravel road. Walking through the lush, towering forest, one hears only the chirping of birds and the buzzing of insects, far from the clamor of traffic. Occasionally, at open vantage points, visitors can gaze upon the scenic beauty of the Tamsui River estuary, a sight that brings immediate joy and clarity. Treehouses are also interspersed along the trail, their unique designs catching the eye. Viewing the scenery from a treehouse offers a delightful, childlike experience. Before the observation deck at the end of the trail, aircraft wreckage and a stele stand by the roadside, erected primarily to commemorate an air crash during a 1972 air force exercise. After passing these historical remnants, climbing the stairs to the platform reveals a panoramic vista. Taipei Port, Tamsui city, and even the North Coast are all clearly visible. Lingering here to enjoy the view, with gentle breezes blowing, is truly refreshing and invigorating. The Niugangling Trail is also an important butterfly migration route in Northern Taiwan. Many subtropical nectar plants, such as red nanmu, Bischofia javanica, fragrant nanmu, Celtis formosana, and Hydrangea angustipetala, are planted along the way, attracting various butterfly species for foraging. Among them, larger species like the Red-spotted Jezebel, Leopard Lacewing, Golden Kaiser-i-Hind, and Common Grass Blue are prevalent. The North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Administration has installed "Ecological Interpretation Signs" along both sides of the trail, allowing visitors to learn about nature in an educational and entertaining way, making it one of Northern Taiwan's ecological education sites.
