Dharma Drum Mountain was founded by Master Sheng Yen as a Buddhist education park integrating education, spiritual practice, and culture, and is recognized as one of Taiwan's Four Great Mountains (major Buddhist organizations). Its name, "Fagu" (Dharma Drum), comes from the analogy "beating the great Dharma drum" in the Lotus Sutra, inspired by the mountain's geographical shape resembling a large drum lying on its side. The aspiration is for the sound of the Dharma to resonate like morning and evening bells, allowing those familiar with Buddhism to feel its intangible power, and enabling those unfamiliar with it to see and understand it. It is hoped that everyone can benefit from the Three Jewels—Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha—and be bathed in the Dharma rain of compassion and wisdom, transforming human society into a healthy, peaceful, and harmonious land. The park's architecture primarily uses earth tones of brown, gray, and white, a tribute to the earth that embodies the calm and stable characteristics of Buddhism. It draws inspiration from significant Buddhist holy sites worldwide, including ancient temples and grottoes in China, Japan, India, and even religious and cultural relics from Europe and America, extracting their architectural features and spirit. The design exudes a lively atmosphere within its tranquility, utilizing eco-friendly construction methods that blend with the natural environment. Built along the mountain contours, it features distinct layers, revealing an expansive grandeur within its subtle elegance. Dharma Drum Mountain is a sacred site dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva and a significant center for Chinese Chan Buddhism. To ensure all visitors can easily experience the tranquility, stability, and Chan joy of Dharma Drum Mountain, group visits require prior reservation by phone or online.
