Liugui Tunnel

The Liugui Tunnel is located within Shibalohan Mountain in Liugui District. It opened to traffic in October 1937 (Minguo Year 26). In its early days, Liugui District was rich in camphor trees, particularly abundant in the Shanping Experimental Forest area. To facilitate the transportation of felled camphor trees for camphor oil production, the Japanese excavated a tunnel, cutting through the gravel terrain of Shibalohan Mountain to construct the Liugui Tunnel. Early local residents referred to it as 'Six Caves'. After the outer bypass road opened in 1992 (Minguo Year 81), the tunnel was rarely used. In 2009 (Minguo Year 98), when Typhoon Morakot severely impacted the mountainous areas of central and southern Taiwan, causing rivers to swell and wash away the roadbed, the outer bypass road was interrupted. During this period, rescue vehicles used the abandoned Liugui Tunnel until the outer bypass road reopened.
