1895 Taiwan Defense Peace Memorial Park

Baguashan, with its commanding height, controls Taiwan's vital north-south transportation routes and has been a strategically important military location since ancient times. The Battle of Baguashan was the largest battle in Taiwan's history of resistance against Japan. On the morning of August 29, 1895, the Japanese forces rushed across the Dadu River and attacked the high ground on the eastern side of Baguashan. Defending general Wu Pengnian led his resistance forces in a desperate struggle, fighting fiercely for three days and nights. Japanese Prince Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa and Major General Yamane were killed by our artillery fire.
