New Jiayang Tribe

The Jiayang Tribe is an indigenous Atayal tribe that originally resided on the Jiayang alluvial fan. After the construction of the Techi Reservoir, the area was designated as a watershed and became unsuitable for habitation. Consequently, the Atayal people relocated to the slope on the opposite bank, forming today's New Jiayang Tribe. With the restoration of the Central Cross-Island Highway, the Tri-Mountain National Scenic Area is also promoting immersive cultural experiences at the New Jiayang Tribe, inviting the public to participate and learn about Atayal culture. A key feature of the New Jiayang Tribe is its continued preservation of Atayal traditions and skills. Males learn hunting in their teenage years, while females must master weaving to pass the coming-of-age ceremony and earn the right to facial tattoos. Visitors can engage in challenge activities such as archery, trap-making, weaving, and vegetable planting. Upon completing these challenges, they can receive facial tattoo stickers, symbolizing Atayal identity.
