Yuanguang Temple is the highest-altitude temple among all temples on Shitoushan (Lion's Head Mountain). Located near the border of Hsinchu County and Miaoli County, it was built into a natural rock cave. Its original name was Shiyan Cave (Lion Rock Cave). It was founded by Monk Pujie in the 21st year of Emperor Guangxu's reign (1895) and is one of the founding temples of Shitoushan. Subsequent renovations have shaped it into its current substantial appearance. Inside, it enshrines Sakyamuni Buddha, Guanyin Bodhisattva, and other deities.
