Hutoushan Geographic Center Monument Park

The Hutoushan Geographic Center Monument Park is located on Hutoushan (Tiger Head Mountain) in Puli Township, Nantou County. It stands at an elevation of approximately 555 meters and is recognized as Taiwan's geometric geographic center, as well as one of Puli's most renowned landmarks. Within the park, stands the Taiwan Geographic Center Monument. Its majestic structure is embraced by two white curved walls, with a three-meter-high ocher-colored panel in the center. A stainless steel pole rises from it, topped by two intersecting rings. The overall design resembles a half-open lily, symbolizing purity and vitality. Inscribed on the monument are the four characters "山清水秀" (Shān Qīng Shuǐ Xiù - Beautiful Mountains and Clear Waters), personally penned by the late President Chiang Ching-kuo, highlighting the beautiful natural environment of the Puli Basin. In 2020, the park was incorporated into the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area and underwent extensive renovations. These included the addition of a new parking lot, restrooms, landscaping facilities, and a skywalk viewing platform, all designed to enhance the visitor experience. The first-order triangulation station at Taiwan's geographic center within the park is an important domestic astronomical measurement and satellite tracking station. Surrounding it are steel sculptures inspired by butterflies and flowing water, showcasing Puli's rich natural ecology and local characteristics. Visitors can ascend approximately 400 stone steps behind the monument to reach the summit of Hutoushan. At the peak, there is the original astronomical triangulation point of Taiwan's geographic center, along with ancient pine forests and open grassy areas. The panoramic views are expansive, allowing visitors to overlook the entire Puli Basin, making it an excellent spot to watch sunrises, sunsets, and nightscapes. Near the summit of Hutoushan, there is also a paragliding field, which attracts many flying enthusiasts on holidays. The Hutoushan Geographic Center Monument Park not only holds significant geographical and surveying importance but also combines natural beauty with cultural art, making it a highly popular tourist attraction in Puli. The park is open year-round, offering comprehensive facilities and convenient transportation, making it ideal for visitors who enjoy hiking, photography, and ecological observation.
