Checheng Log Pond is located in Shuili Township, Nantou County. It is one of the most representative landscapes in the Checheng area and an important testament to Taiwan's forestry history. This pond was originally built for the development of the timber industry, witnessing Checheng's prosperity during the heyday of its timber industry in the 1960s and 1970s. Regarding its history and purpose, the Checheng Log Pond, also known as the Fir Log Pond, was built during the period when Checheng's timber industry was thriving. At that time, large quantities of raw logs were transported from the mountains to Checheng, where a "sky crane" (a large gantry crane) was used to lift and immerse them in the pond. The purpose of this was to release the wood's resin, reduce the growth of bacteria and mold, and extend the timber's preservation period. Immersed wood was also less prone to cracking and deformation, and easier to process. A distinctive feature of the sky crane was that its structure was built with Taiwanese cypress, and it could lift up to 11 to 13 metric tons, serving as an important symbol of the local forestry industry. After restoration, the sky crane has become a spiritual landmark of Checheng. As for its present appearance, in terms of ecology and scenery, with the decline of the timber industry, the log pond has been transformed into an ecological pond. A lakeside walking trail is planned along its banks, lined with plants such as maple trees, camphor trees, bald cypress, and orchid trees. Surrounded by mountains, the shimmering lake reflects the changing colors of the bald cypress and the peaks, creating a picturesque scene often described as a "secret paradise reminiscent of Japan." The cultural atmosphere here is enhanced by Japanese-style wooden buildings, distinctive tea houses, and a timber industry exhibition hall by the log pond, giving the area a nostalgic ambiance while also incorporating modern cultural, creative, and leisure elements. For travel recommendations, visitors are advised to stroll along the lakeside trail to enjoy the lake and mountain scenery and the seasonal changes of the plants. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon at a Japanese-style tea house and experience Checheng's unique slow-paced lifestyle. Additionally, visit the timber industry exhibition hall to learn about Taiwan's forestry development history and processing techniques. Checheng Log Pond is not only a symbol of natural beauty but also a microcosm of Taiwan's forestry culture. Whether for enjoying the scenery, taking photos, or experiencing the charm of the old timber industry, it is a must-visit attraction when coming to Checheng, Nantou.
