Shuishe Dam

Shuishe Dam is located northwest of Sun Moon Lake. It is a crucial dam structure for the Sun Moon Lake hydroelectric power project and was completed in 1934. At that time, to increase Sun Moon Lake's water storage capacity and enhance power generation efficiency, the plan was to build Shuishe Dam in the Shuishe Creek valley. Together with Toushe Dam, located to the southwest, it would jointly intercept water, transforming Sun Moon Lake from a natural lake into a reservoir. As a result, the lake's surface area expanded, the water level rose by over 25 meters, connecting the originally separate Sun Lake and Moon Lake to form today's expansive body of water. The dam structure is hundreds of meters long. On top of the dam, there's a boardwalk approximately 100 to 200 meters long. The bike path here is one of the important sections of the Sun Moon Lake cycling trail, offering a 180-degree panoramic view of the lake's scenic beauty, making it a popular spot for many tourists to stop and take photos. This section of the bike path is a wooden boardwalk, situated right next to the lake. It is recommended to slow down and walk your bike to ensure safety. On one side at the base of Shuishe Dam, there is a 'Martyr's Monument' commemorating Taiwanese workers who died on duty during the Sun Moon Lake hydroelectric power project from 1931 to 1934. The monument bears the names and detailed stories of several fallen workers, serving as a reminder of the arduous efforts and dedication involved in the project back then.
