Wuchang Temple is located in Jiji Township, Nantou County, serving as an important local religious center primarily dedicated to Xuantian Shangdi (Emperor of the Dark Heaven). The history of Wuchang Temple dates back to the Japanese colonial period, Meiji 36 (1903), when local gentry in Jiji raised funds to sculpt a statue of Xuantian Shangdi. The temple officially opened in 1923, following the enshrinement of a spirit branch from Nanyan Palace on Wudang Mountain in Hubei, China. In 1990, local residents donated land for expansion, and construction began in 1991. Shortly after its completion in 1999, the temple was struck by the 921 Earthquake, causing most of the structure to collapse. However, the deities' statues were rescued by devotees and remained undamaged. The collapsed old temple site has been preserved as a memorial to the earthquake disaster, now known as the 'Old Wuchang Temple Ruins.' In 2022, it was registered as a national cultural asset, becoming the only preserved 921 Earthquake relic building in Jiji Township, possessing both educational and cultural value. The new temple completed its enshrinement ceremony on October 12, 2013, continuing its role as a local religious center. Wuchang Temple is not only a significant religious site but also attracts many visitors who come to explore and pay their respects due to its unique historical background and its status as an earthquake relic. Legend has it that the beard of the Xuantian Shangdi statue grows longer each year, symbolizing the continuity and strength of faith, becoming a spiritual anchor for the local community. Nearby Wuchang Temple are the famous Zhejiang Taishun Corridor Bridge and the Yue Lao Temple (Matchmaker God Temple), which visitors can also explore to experience Jiji's rich cultural and historical ambiance. Conveniently located in Jiji Township's downtown area, it is ideal for a cultural tour and religious pilgrimage.
